Sanford has been a Certified Peer Support Specialist for 11 years, working with severely mentally ill patients and those with substance use disorders.  He has been in recovery for over 11 years.

Joey Grist

Joe Therrall Grist II (Joey) is a native of Bruce, Mississippi.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Mississippi and served as a corpsman in the United States Navy.  He also served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1996 – 2004.  After many years in addiction, Joey has been clean and sober since October, 2005.  In addition to his official role as Purchasing Director at the North Mississippi State Hospital, he also leads many of the addiction recovery groups there.

our leadership team

Curtis has been in recovery for more than twenty-five years.  He is a member of several national organizations including the Association of Recovery Community Organizations, College of Behavior Health, American Psychological Association, Faces and Voices of Recovery and the International Association of Peer Support Specialist.  Has served on numerous community boards and is also a member Mississippi Alcohol and Drug Council.  Curtis earned his Bachelor of Business Management and Master of Science Psychology Degree from the University of Phoenix

Shelley Johnson
Shelley earned her Bachelor's in Human and Social Services Administration from Bellevue University and offers a wide range of professional experience in both the for-profit and non-profit markets. Her career includes 24 years senior management experience where she served as the Director of Provider Relations with a mental health/ substance abuse managed care organization and most recently served as the Executive Director for the Jackson area Continuum of Care for homeless services.  Shelley has been in recovery for over 6 years.

2012 - Joined the Board of the Peer Support Network through the Mississippi Department of Mental Health

2012 - Joined the Advisory Council for the state of Mississippi Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Services

2013 - Incorporated with the state of Mississippi Secretary of State

2013 - Became a member of the Mississippi Community Leaders and Interfaith Partnership (MCLIP)

2013 - Joined the Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America

2013 - Joined the National College of Behavioral Health

2014 - Member of the American Psychological Association

2015 - Attended national "United to Face Addiction Rally" in Washington D.C.

2016 - Facilitated technical assistance from the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse for RCO organizations and state agencies.

2016 - Attended National CARA Family Day Rally through Policy Link.

2016 - Established MS Recovery Community Collaborative
